The Silver Crash of 1893 devastated the mining business and most of the residences vanished over night. At one point, Philipsburg was home to the largest silver mines in the state and its demand for power lead to the damming of Flint Creek and the creation of Georgetown Lake.
Philipsburg has not changed much over the years with 32 historic buildings still standing today. The grade school was built in 1894 and is the oldest school in Montana still in use. Downtown Philipsburg is a thriving retail corridor with rows of turn-of-the-century buildings lining Main Street. The streets are home to many restaurants, shops, watering holes and even an Opera house.
