Human use of this 4,504 deeded and 3,500 leased acre Milk River Ranch goes back at least several thousand years and has remained in the present family of ownership for three generations with the original parcel acquired under the Homestead Act of 1913. In addition to being a working farm/ranch operation, this Milk River Ranch is situated in the Judith River Formation and yields significant fossil remains from the Cretaceous Period. Also commonly discovered immediately north in southern Alberta in what they describe as Cretaceous Bear Paw Formation in the Milk River drainage is ammonite fossils dated at about 71 million years old. They are found in various sizes and colors. This ranch is also rich in native American cultural sites such as an estimated 1,000 Tepee Rings, Ceremonial sites and Drive Lines to Buffalo Jumps. It is proven that many native American tribes including Salish-Kootenai, Pend dOreille, Blackfoot, Cree, Sioux, Assiniboine, Gros Ventre and Crow hunted, traded and occupied this area. A written record exists of a battle on the Milk River in 1860 where a newly arrived Pend dOreille group suffered a catastrophic defeat in an Assiniboine surprise attack. A chiefs son, killed in the surprise attack, is thought to be buried on the Milk River Ranch. In 1875, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police outpost was set up on the ranch at a site that has been identified.
